Sunderland student’s Olypmic artwork goes on display

THE Olympic-inspired work of a former University of Sunderland student goes on display this evening.

Michelle Castles has created a collection of sculptures depicting athletes competing in various Olympic events.

The sculptures are made from a malleable wire mesh and took the 37-year-old almost as long to complete from inception as the Games themselves took to organise.

Metal athletes will “leap” across Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory art gallery, representing the venue’s first installation of sculptures.

Michelle said of the opening night: “There’ll be mixed feelings because I’m getting quite tired now.

“I can see it in my mind’s eye, hopefully it looks the same in reality.”
