Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has missed out on a place in England's Euro 16 squad '“ but Newcastle United attacker Andros Townsend has received a late call-up.

Defoe had hoped his form this season would be enough to secure a place on the plane to the France after an injury to forward Danny Welbeck.

However, Roy Hodgson has instead opted to call up Newcastle winger Townsend and Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford in a provisional 26-man squad, which will be cut down to 23 by May 31.

Defoe has hit 18 goals this season but the chances of the 33-year-old having a final hurrah with the Three Lions now appear over.

Defoe has played 55 times for his country, scoring 19 goals.
