HARD work and dedication has paid dividends for a social club which is in the running for an Echo award.
The Mill View Social Club & Institute, in Station Road, Fulwell, has been nominated for a What’s On Where honour.
It is in the running in the social club of the year category and the nomination praised the way the club catered for all of its 3,000-plus members.
Club secretary Les Cutting said: “It is nice to be nominated. It is nice for all the voluntary work that the committee and the staff do.”
The club has been going since 1957 and is known as the biggest in the area and with a flourishing membership.
Mill View Social Club, in the Fulwell area of Sunderland, is an affiliated member of the Club and Institute Union (CIU). It boasts around 2500 male and 400 female members and provides artists and bands for members and guests on five evenings a week.
“We have various functions, entertainment and do a lot of work for our aged members,” said Les.
But its contribution goes much further than that.
Les explained: “We also do a lot of charity work. We do collections for charitable organisations.”
The deadline for entries is Thursday, February 5. After that, the judges will meet to draw up a shortlist from all the contenders and it is already an impressive list. Then, we will be revealing the winners on Thursday, February 26 in a glittering finale which will be held at The Best Western Roker Hotel.
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.
They aim to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.
We want you to nominate your favourites in each of the categories listed on this page.
