MACKEM singing hopefuls Diva crashed out of BBC1 talent show The Voice on Saturday.

Best friends Shelley Atkinson, 41, and Maxine Jackson, 43, wowed judge Tom Jones in the blind auditions with their version of the Barbra Streisand/Celine Dion duet Tell Him.

On Saturday night’s show, they faced up against 21-year-old Joseph Apostol in the battle rounds.

The duo’s performance of Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me moved Welsh superstar Jones to tears, but he ultimately chose Apostol to carry on to the next round of the competition. With none of the other three judges – Will.I.Am, Jessie J and Danny O’Donoghue, – opting to steal the pair for their own teams, it was the end of the road for Diva.

Maxine, who works at Greggs at The Galleries in Washington, met carer Shelley while the two were working as performers in Tenerife and have been singing together for decades.

Shelley, earlier this year, said: “We aren’t 21, or a size 10, so The Voice was perfect – the coaches can’t see you, they just hear your
voice.

“You’re never too old to have a go at something.”
