The Black Cats may be near the bottom of the Premier League - but they're lucky number 13 in the social media stakes.

Sunderland's 397,000 followers on Twitter means they are 13th in the table of Premier League teams, confirming the size of their fanbase on Wearside.

Despite the thousands, which put them above their current Premier League place of 18, they are still a significant way behind rivals Newcastle United - who come in 8th with 648,000 followers.

Arsenal have the most followers of any English club on Twitter with 6.46 million, but Manchester United are catching up fast with 6.29 million.

United captain Wayne Rooney has 12.1 million followers - and is the most followed player in the Premier League, just ahead of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who has 10 million.

Real Madrid are the most followed club in the Champions League with 17.4 million Twitter followers, putting them ahead of their deadly rivals FC Barcelona who have 16.1 million followers.

Four of the top ten most followed clubs in the elite European competition are English, namely Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, with 6.18 million, and Manchester City on 2.76 million.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in a league of his own in terms of players with 38.5 million followers.
