The Wearsdiers' boss was keen to avoid a tie with any U21 side, but will now have to do battle with the Magpies' second string as the road to Wembley continues.

Ties are set to be played on the week commencing January 7, meaning the Black Cats will complete the fixture after their League One fixture at Charlton or FA Cup tie with Bolton, dependent on whether they progress in the competition.

Sunderland have already brushed off Stoke City U21s, Carlisle United, Morecambe and Notts County in the competition and are now just three games away from a trip to Wembley.

In addition, the club have scooped around £65,000 in prize money - with that figure set to increase by £40,000 if they can find their way past Newcastle.
