Donald bought the club in the summer from Ellis Short and has overseen a major summer overhaul on Wearside, with 11 new signings arriving.

Around 22,000 season tickets have been sold, a staggering amount considering Sunderland have suffered back-to-back relegations, for the 2018-19 campaign.

Donald took to Twitter to thank supporters.

He wrote: "21984 season tickets! Over 1000 tickets sold 4 Charlton today [Thursday] alone.Crowd is already 28000+.

"Thanks 2 every Sunderland AFC fan. We r making more progress behind scenes. The support is truly fantastic after all u have been thru. Thank u - we need u to stick with us - FANtastic!!"
