To quote Basil Fawlty, the Match of the Day pundit is “stating the bleedin’ obvious” as the Black Cats prop up the Premier League with only two points.

Gary Lineker, the host of the flagship BBC show, quipped how Sunderland don’t usually start playing until after October, a reference to previous struggles at the start of the season.

Shearer though believes the team’s current problems stem from new boss David Moyes bringing in enough players in the transfer window.

“I get the feeling David Moyes didn’t sign as many players as he wanted to sign,” said Shearer.

“They can’t keep flirting with relegation like they have year-in, year-out and expect to get away with it.

“Not signing the players that needed to be signed, they’re in serious trouble.”
