WE all know how well the Black Cats are supported on Wearside – but now a new map has revealed that SAFC has a strong following all over the world online.
Micro-blogging site Twitter has created a custom Premier League map of clubs’ followers.
Built using data pulled from the official Twitter accounts of each team, the map provides a snapshot of followers at a glance, with scalable details allowing localised neighbourhood searches within the UK.
Sunderland AFC currently has just under 340,000 people following its account and, as expected, it is the most-followed club in the Sunderland Central constituency area.
However, neighbours Newcastle United are the most followed team in the Washington and Sunderland West constituency.
Durham City also belongs to the Magpies, with Sunderland again second.
Surprisingly, the other area where the Wearsiders are most in demand is the York Outer area, in Yorkshire, while they are the 8th most followed in York Central. Further afield, the team is the 12th most-followed Premier League club in Ireland, the 13th highest in Canada and the 14th in China. One country Sunderland have more followers than their nearest and dearest is South Korea, with the Black Cats ninth and the Tynesiders in 11th.
This may have something to do with the fact that South Korean international stars Ji Dong-won and Ki Sung-Yeung have both had spells at the Stadium of Light.
Despite their recent excellent record in derby encounters between the two sides, Newcastle are the most followed team in much of the North East, including some areas of Wearside.
