PATRIOTIC Wearsiders marked St George’s Day in style, with many donning red and white for the occasion.

They included punters at The Wavendon, off Chester Road, who joined staff as they dressed up as St George and the dragon he is said to have slain.

English pub grub was also served up, including fish and chips and bangers and mash.

Regulars at The Jacksons also got in the spirit of the day by dressing up in costume, while flags went up outside the pub.

Wendy Purell, of the Dundas Street pub, said: “We do something every year to celebrate St George’s Day.

“It’s nice to see everyone get involved.”

Staff at Mandy’s Candies, in Southwick, used the day to raise funds for the cancer day unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

They dressed up and took to Southwick Green where they spent the afternoon collecting cash in buckets.
