ANOTHER bumper turnout for the Race for Grace helped raise thousands of pounds for a Wearside hospice.
Despite not being the warmest day, it was still a bright and breezy one for hundreds of race-goers who turned up in their droves to Herrington Country Park for the annual charity run.
It was more than a decade ago that fund-raising first began.
Youngsters from Sunderland Kainan Karate Kai group, who practice at Deptford and Millfield Community Centre, were among those taking on the three-mile course.
Steve Johnson, assistant instructor, said: “The kids have got really involved in the Race for Grace after doing it last year and it’s something that they really wanted to do again.”
Horrible Histories author Terry Deary set the runners and walkers on their way.
Born-and-bred Sunderland lad Terry said: “You’ve got to give a lot of credit to the people of Sunderland for taking part in this and supporting Grace House.”
County Durham youngster Joel Atkin, 15, was the fastest finisher, completing the 5km course in just over 20 minutes.
