SUNDERLAND’S new mayor has been officially sworn in to office.
Millfield Coun Iain Kay, who takes over from Coun Norma Wright, is looking forward to a “unique year ahead” after being presented with his ceremonial chains.
“I am looking forward to maintaining the momentum we have already achieved in modernising and upgrading the mayoral office,” said Coun Kay, who was born in Roker, and has been a school governor since 1986.
“Tradition and heritage are also very important things and we want to work together to restore and increase the prestige of this ceremonial role, at the same time as preparing it to meet any new challenges we may face.
“I am conscious of the fact that with the Olympics, Diamond Jubilee and the imminent arrival of HMS Ocean in the city for the Freedom Parade, that this will be a unique year in terms of civic action for myself and my Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bob Heron and our partners.”
Coun Kay’s wife, Coun Barbara McClennan, was sworn in as the mayoress.
