MARATHON of the North have announced the run will not be returning to Sunderland in 2015.
The 26.2 mile event was founded by Steve Cram’s Events of the North outfit in 2012 after the success of the popular Sunderland 10k.
The run hit the headlines in 2013 when a marshalling mistake meant all-bar-one runner took an accidental shortcut.
It was later announced the run would not take place in 2014 due to major roadworks in the city centre.
Now organisers have confirmed the run will not be returning in 2015, though the “Festival of Running” will return with shorter events.
In an announcement on its Facebook page, organisers said: “We hope to be able to announce the 2015 plans very soon and look forward to welcoming you all back to the event.
“Final agreements for the event are being made with Sunderland City Council at the moment, but we can announce that the Marathon will not be returning in 2015.”
