Wearside’s Liberal Democrats have branded a new brown bin charge as “bad news”.

A new annual charge to collect garden waste has been branded a “rip off” by a political party acting in Sunderland.

Lib Dem members in the city have vowed to fight Labour’s “brown bin tax”, which will see those who opt in paying £25 a year to have their garden waste collected by the local authority.

The decision, which was made yesterday, has sparked outrage across the city – with some residents branding it a “disgrace” when they already pay council tax.

Brown bin collections will continue as normal for the rest of 2015. The new charge will come into force in March of next year.

Niall Hodson, Liberal Democrat campaigner for Millfield and Thornholme ward, said: “Emptying the bins is a basic service that people expect the council to do – after all that’s what we pay our council tax for.

“Not only is Labour’s brown bin tax bad news for residents, it’s also bad news for the environment as garden waste may well end up in normal wheelie bins and won’t be recycled.

“Local Liberal Democrats across Sunderland, Washington, Houghton and Hetton will be fighting this decision all the way.”
