NURSERIES were buzzing when they celebrated more than 30 years of child care.
Busy Bees centres across Wearside helped the national chain mark three decades of day care.
Sunderland Mayor Bob Heron dropped into the Fulwell nursery in Newcastle Road, yesterday, to help staff and youngsters with their celebrations.
He cut the centre’s beehive-shaped cake and spent time with the children, aged between six months and four years old, who enjoyed an afternoon tea party.
Nursery manager Joanna Brown said: “The children were looking forward to dressing up.
“We decorated the front of the nursery and had a celebratory tea pot to give to the mayor.”
Busy Bees nursery in Cleadon also helped with the effort.
A story book, called Busy Bee Makes Tea, was commissioned to commemorate the occasion, and a storyteller from Usborne Books visited the Cleadon site to read to the children.
The company also had special tea sets made for the nurseries to use during the afternoon tea parties, which had a 1983 theme.
Cleadon nursery manager Judith Dixon said: “All the children and parents were invited along.
“And a few who weren’t at nursery yesterday came in to take part.
“It was a lovely day, and everyone got a bee-themed cup cake to enjoy as well.”
