ROADS in Sunderland which were closed because of a gas leak have now re-oepened.

Officers from Northumbria Police say that because of a leak at Howick Retail Park, in Monkwearmouth, Dundas Street and Roker Avenue nearby they had to close to traffic.

Police were at the scene and advised motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Now however, they say that the roads have been re-opened, with traffic now flowing.

A Northern Gas Networks spokesman said: “We received calls from the Monkwearmouth area and our engineers arrived on site at 4pm to investigate the cause of the leak.”
