RUSH hour traffic had to be diverted after a smash in Sunderland.

A driver was taken treated by paramedics, following an accident in Ferryboat Lane at about 6.30am.

The road by the Citroen garage was blocked in both directions after a collision between a white Transit van and another car.

The driver of the van was checked over by ambulance staff, but is not thought to be injured.

The van was towed away, while staff from Sunderland City Council cleared up debris on the road.

A spokeswoman from Northumbria Police said officers were called to the scene shortly after 6.30am and were directing traffic along Hylton Lane.

Investigations into the cause of the smash are still ongoing.
