Sunderland respite centre gets £15,000 boost from Postcode Lottery

A Wearside respite centre is now offering help to families and carers of poorly youngsters thanks to a cash grant of almost £15,000.

Grace House North East, in Southwick, has been handed £14,802 thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The funding boost means the Faber Road site will be able to offer complementary therapies, counselling and support groups to families and carers of children and young people who have complex disabilities, health needs and life-limiting conditions who use Grace House.

The project is called One Place, Your Space and families were invited along to meet some of the therapists and receive a mini sample of their services, as well as a tour of the facilities and a celebratory cup cake.

The free service hopes to encourage carers to engage in activity outside of their caring role.

The support groups and counselling sessions will provide a space for carers to talk about the physical, mental and practical challenges faced in caring for a disabled child, as well as looking at how they can be addressed.

Holistic therapy sessions will ease the physical stress of a caring role, whilst providing a relaxing retreat.

Grace House business development manager Jane Lertas-Robinson said: “We are very excited to be launching this fantastic new project to parents and carers across the North East.

“At Grace House, our aim is to support the whole family and with the funding we have received from the Postcode Community Trust we are now able to do that.

“The project will be an ideal opportunity to help address some of the impact on physical and mental health that caring for a disabled child can have and we hope that families will benefit from it greatly.”

Members of the public use their postcode to play People’s Postcode Lottery.

A minimum of 30% goes directly to charities across Great Britain and internationally.

It costs £10 for 10 draws paid monthly in advance.
