The 22-year-old is on a season-long loan from Spanish side Atletico Madrid and has made seven appearances for Sunderland so far this campaign.

The Echo understands Sunderland do have an option to make Manquillo's loan deal permanent but there is nothing in the arrangement saying the Black Cats have to sign him after a certain amount of appearances.

Reports surfaced overnight that Sunderland would be facing a bill of £9.5m if the Spaniard makes 25 appearances for the club this season.

That is not the case but the season-long loan does include an option for Sunderland to make the move a permanent four-year deal after the completion of the loan.

Manquillo has recently lose his place in the Sunderland side to Billy Jones, who has impressed in the games against Southampton, Arsenal and in the club's maiden Premier League win of the season, away at Bournemouth.

Manquillo spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Liverpool but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at Anfield under then-manager Brendan Rodgers.

Manquillo – a former target of Juventus – enjoyed a productive spell last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Marseille but was surplus to requirements at Atletico this season and joined Sunderland in the summer.

The right-footed player has represented his country at youth level up to under-21 and has both UEFA Champions League and Europa League experience with Atletico.
