Sunderland mum tells of '˜living nightmare' as son remains missing four months on

The heartbroken mother of a Wearside man who has been missing for over four months has issued an emotional plea for him to '˜come home'.

Distraught Colleen Young says she has been ‘living a nightmare’ ever since 22-year-old Callum Young disappeared without a trace from his bedsit in Hylton Road, Sunderland in August.

The 43-year-old mum-of-five desperately hopes that every ring of her phone and knock on the door will be from her beloved son - but she is growing ever more concerned for his safety.

Miss Young, from Rutherglen Road, Sunderland, says Callum is a ‘mammy’s boy’ who would rarely go a day without speaking to her.

But now she has endured a painstaking period of four-and-a-half months without hearing his voice.

Callum Young was last seen at his shared bedsit in Hylton Road, Sunderland, on the afternoon of Thursday, August 27.

Miss Young is appealing for her son or anyone who may have know his whereabouts to get in touch - and bring her torture to an end.

She said: “If Callum sees this appeal I would say to him ‘just come home’.

“I just wanted him to get in touch so I know that he is okay. I really want him home.

“Every time the phone rings or there is a knock on the door I am hoping it is him.

Miss Young says she is unable to sleep due to her constant worry over her son’s safety.

She added: “It has been horrible, I have been living a nightmare. I can’t sleep. I didn’t even celebrate Christmas. He is a mammy’s boy and we would talk most days.

“He has just vanished and I haven’t heard anything since. The police keep telling me they don’t have any new information. I just feel like I’ve been left in the dark. I just want answers, I want my son back.”

Miss Young says Callum’s disappearance has also taken a huge toll on his brother Michael, 24, and sisters Catherine, 20, Demi, 18, and Shannon, 15.

She said: “They are always asking about him and want him to be found safe and well.”

Chief Inspector Jerry Pearson, of Northumbria Police, said: “The disappearance of a family member is incredibly distressing and we recognise the huge impact this can have on the family and friends of those who go missing. Extensive enquiries have been made to find Callum, which has included viewing CCTV, speaking to his family and friends, enquiries via Social media, conducting extensive searches using specialist resources and issuing a number of media appeals.

“Unfortunately, however, despite our extensive enquiries Callum has not been found and remains missing.

“It goes without saying that any new information that comes to light about his whereabouts will be thoroughly investigated and I would urge anyone who does have information they think may help to get in contact.”
