WEARSIDE MPs have visited postal workers to help them sort festive mail during what is the most hectic time of the year.
Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott MP visited the city’s delivery office to pass on Christmas wishes and messages of encouragement to the busy staff.
Ms Elliott was shown around the office by manager Phil Shakespeare and was introduced to staff sorting and delivering mail in the run-up to Christmas.
“It was great to chat with our posties, many of whom I’ve met on previous visits to the site,” Ms Elliott said. “They work hard all year round to keep our postal service moving.
“However, their efforts during the festive period are particularly worthy of thanks and praise – they quite literally deliver Christmas to Sunderland.”
Houghton and Sunderland South’s Bridget Phillipson popped into the delivery office in Houghton, where she met staff including manager Gerard Gilroy.
“I know this is the busiest time of year for the postmen and women and I wanted to thank them for all their hard work,” she said. “They do such an important job all year round but particularly over the festive period when many people are waiting for deliveries. I wish them all the very best for Christmas. ”
Mr Gilroy said: “Our postmen and women are working extremely hard to deliver Christmas cards, letters and parcels to people across Sunderland. We are grateful that Julie visited the office to see our operation and to support the team during our busiest time of year.
“We’d like to remind our customers to post early so that friends and family have longer to enjoy their Christmas greetings.”
