MARTIAL arts fighters on Wearside have spoken of their pride after taking part in an Olympics celebration.
The Kazen Kai North East, led by sensei Eddie Gillespie, joined forces with sensei Liz Fraser, from Pennywell Honto Shin Karate Clubto, to take part in a display at Herrington Country Park.
The clubs wowed the crowds with demonstrations of basic combinations, free-style fighting, basic and advanced kata and self-defence demonstrations from both junior and seniors.
More than 300 people watched the demo, which was part of the Olympic torch relay through Sunderland.
Eddie said: “This display showed the high standard of karate and kickboxing in the North East
“I’ve competed and trained in many places and seen a number of styles, associations and individual martial artists. The standard of those in this display was as good as any I’ve ever seen.”
