High flying Sunderland College students celebrate last year.

It will be good A-level news for many in the town, but others will be starting the frantic process of going through clearing for a university place.

Students at school sixth forms and Sunderland College were on the doorsteps at around 8am to pick up their results.

For Southmoor Academy this is the first year of A-level results since the sixth form opened.

Sammy Wright, head of the Ryhope Road school’s sixth form said they still had results to go through, but early indications were looking good.

Monica Shepherd, head of St Anthony’s Girls’ Catholic Academy said the figures are again looking good for the Thornhill school.

She said among the achievements is a 100% pass rate in 33 A-level subjects and 70% of all A-level entries were graded A*-C.

Mrs Shepherd said: “Girls of all abilities, in our inclusive and mixed ability sixth form, have been successful across all subject areas showing a continued trend of achievement and progress over many decades.

“Girls who joined us for sixth form from schools within and beyond the city, continue to be very successful.”

UCAS lines opened this morning for students to find university places, but outside of going into clearing, many students will look at alternative avenues such as joining the workforce or going on an apprenticeship scheme.

Students can contact UCAS on 0371 4680468, the National Careers Service on 0800 100900 and the National Apprenticeship Helpdesk on 0800 0150400.
