Sunderland hospital help service is up for an award

A service which is often the first port of call for hospital visitors has been nominated for an award.

The Help and Advice Service at Sunderland Royal Hospital, in Kayll Road, is in the running for honours in the Sunderland Echo Health Awards.

The news brought delight to Audrey Barrass, who is the Help and Advice Service Manager. She said it was down to a dedicated team doing its best to help the public.

She added: “We are delighted to have been nominated for such an award. The HAAS team work extremely hard to provide advice and support to patients, relatives, visitors and carers, sometimes in very difficult circumstances, and recognition of our service is appreciated.”

The nomination, from a member of the public, highlighted a team effort, which included HAAS staff Jade Smith, Shirley Gillum, Helen Wilkinson, Lou Herms, Judith Welsh, Bev Taylor and Audrey Barrass.

The team is now in the running in the Customer Service category. The nomination read: “The staff in this department are very helpful and do their best to help anyone who comes into the department.”

HAAS staff try to solve concerns as quickly as they can without the need to go down a formal process. The team joins a growing list of entries for this year’s awards which recognise the excellent work done by all aspects of the health service, whether its behind-the-scenes heroes or frontline staff.

The Sunderland Echo Health awards aim is to make this year’s competition bigger and better than ever before. But to do that, we need your nominations in the categories listed below.

This year, the competition is being held in association with City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, with NHS Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group as partner sponsors and Olivers Dental Studio as category sponsors.

The best contenders will make it to our grand finals at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on April 14. Before then, you can nominate up to the deadline of March 31.
