Gloria Middleton, who has been with the Westbourne Medical Group in Shiney Row for 25 years, said she was gobsmacked to be put forward for the Best of Health Awards.

And there was more good news as the practice as a whole was also put in the running for a title.

Gloria is the on-clinical partner at the practice which she first joined as a practice manager.

But on top of her work at the group, she is also;

l A community first responder with the North East Ambulance Service which she does on a voluntary basis.

l She has received the Queens Service Medal for her voluntary work.

l She is a specialist advisor for the Care Quality Commission and has held the role since 2014.

l Was the Executive Practice Manager Lead for the Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group between 2012 and 2016.

Yet despite all of that she said she was “taken aback” that a patient had put her in the running for an award.

The nomination said: “She always greets ss with a smile and nothing is a trouble for her.”

It praised Gloria for her “unstinting care and concern.”

But modest Gloria said: “I do it to give something back. If I can help someone, why not?”
