Sunderland Harrier Sparrow shines at Sheffield

Sunderland Harrier Sparrow Morley warmed up for this Saturday's North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships by winning the 3000m in the Northern Athletics Open Indoor meeting at Sheffield on Saturday.

The Newcastle University student recorded 8min 51.79sec – compared to his outdoor best of 8.47.32 – to defeat promising youngster Hassan Ben-Tiba of New Marske Harriers (8.52.64).

Blackhill Bounder Jordan Bell was seventh (9.35.83).

Also bound for the Cross Country Championships at Durham are Morley’s club-mates Andy Powell, Steve McMahon and Jason Waite, who filled the first three places in the Sunderland parkrun at Silksworth on Saturday.

Powell won in a time (16.05), just five seconds outside his best, with Steve McMahon second (17.03) and Waite third (17.05).

Sunderland Stroller Chris Dwyer was fourth (17.48).
