GARDENING enthusiasts are being urged to enter this year’s Sunderland in Bloom competition in a bid to land coveted prizes.

Entrants will hope to wow judges with a flair for colour, design, unusual materials, visual effects and originality.

Eleven classes are open to anyone who has taken time to create greenery outside their home, business, school or office.

A winner will be selected in each class, for each of Sunderland North, Sunderland East, Sunderland West, Washington and the Coalfields. Councillor James Blackburn, cabinet member for city services, said: “The Sunderland in Bloom Civic Awards gives us all the chance to recognise and celebrate the massive contribution gardeners make to our city.

“Gardeners and the green-fingered community are creating a better, greener environment for us all to live in and enjoy. The awards open to everyone, and we hope anyone who enjoys gardening and creating something beautiful will enter by completing the entry forms.”

The deadline for entries is September 6. Trophies, certificates and gift tokens will be awarded for the best entry in each category.

The overall winner in the Best Garden class will receive the top prize of £250 to spend at sponsor Clay’s Garden Centre.
