Sunderland forward on beach training and why he is confident Cats can stay up

Defeat to Manchester City coupled with bruising defeats elsewhere has left Sunderland six points adrift of safety with just 11 games to play.

But forward Fabio Borini remains confident the relegation-threatened Black Cats can get out of trouble this season, with Sunderland managing to wriggle their way out of worse situations before.

Sam Allardyce guided Sunderland to safety last season after a strong end to the season that saw just one defeat in the final 11 matches.

Meanwhile, former boss Dick Advocaat pulled off his own great escape in 2014-15 with three wins and three draws from the final eight games of the season.

And in 2013-14, Gus Poyet oversaw a remarkable run of four straight wins in the final five matches of the season to secure his own place in Sunderland’s history of recent great escapes.

Borini remains calm about the situation facing David Moyes’ side ahead of another free weekend, with Sunderland not in action again until they host Burnley a week on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who was part of the first team group training at Roker seafront in midweek, said: “I’ve seen worse in terms of mood and I’ve seen worse situations as well.

“The beach training was more of a change of scenery, especially since we don’t have a game at the weekend.”

He added: “In the past, last year even, we did the same against Chelsea and Everton.

“If we show the same passion, attitude and desire to win games – home and away – I’m sure we will get the results.”
