TWO fishing boats were rescued from thick fog off the Sunderland coast.

RNLI crews were called to help a broken-down boat that was drifting a mile off the coast at about 4.40pm yesterday.

While searching the area using radar equipment, the crew came across another fishing boat that had become lost in the fog.

The RNLI contacted the first boat to check it was anchored while they escorted the lost vessel back to shore.

While sailing back to Sunderland, they spotted a distress flare.

They discovered it was the broken-down boat and towed it back to Deptford while the other vessel followed.
