WEARSIDE football fans are confident their team can record a third straight win over their arch rivals this weekend.
As excitement builds ahead of Saturday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle, we went out onto the streets of Sunderland to speak to some fans on their thoughts about this weekend’s match.
Though Newcastle United are 11 places above Sunderland in the league table, fans say they are optimistic about the chances of Sunderland coming away with a win.
Gus Poyet’s men are currently 19th in the Premier League but have lost just one of their last seven matches in the division.
Emma Kershaw, 21, from Whitburn, said: “Sunderland’s going to win. I reckon the score will be 4-2. ”
Another Black Cats fan, Megan George, a 19-year-old hairdresser said: “Sunderland will win 3-1.
“We’re at the bottom of the league but this is giving us the motivation we need to go up to Newcastle, win and make sure we stay in the Premier League.”
Fans of both teams will be making predictions about the scoreline when the two rivals meet on Saturday, and Ken Johnston is no different.
The 70-year-old retired engineer from Washington, said: “The chance of Sunderland winning is very little, they’ll get beat.”
John Leitch, 37, from Washington, was also wary about Sunderland’s chances. He said: “Newcastle are a far better team, but big teams can be beat. Anything could happen.”
Optimistic Black Cats fan Rob Moorhead, a 60-year-old food factory worker from Seaton Carew, said: “I think Sunderland will win 2-1, but on the day Newcastle can probably beat anyone.’’
Nathan Barnes, a 22-year-old student from near Durham Road in Sunderland, said: “I’ve been to the last three derby days and it’s a brilliant day out.
“Sunderland should win.”
