BUDDING Tom Daleys have made history after diving to glory in a country-wide competition.
Sunderland City Dive Team, who train at the city’s Aquatic Centre, have won the Tynemouth Trophy for the first time.
The team, which includes youngsters aged six up to the masters category for those aged over 50, managed to beat opposition from clubs across the country.
Competing against eight other teams from across England and Scotland, the Wearside team achieved a winning total to take the trophy away from Bradford Esprit, who have claimed it for the last three years running.
Nigel Price, whose eight-year-old daughter Sophie is part of the victorious team, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement by the divers considering that we’ve only been formed since March, when we went independent from Sunderland Swimming Club.
“It’s the third competition that we’ve taken part in and everybody is really pleased with this result.”
A total of 24 members took part in the action at Tynemouth Pool, in North Tyneside.
Points are gathered by individuals with the results collated to produce a team result.
“We managed to get 12 medals on the day as well as numerous certificates,” added Mr Price.
“Most of the members are from the Sunderland area and it’s great that we have one of the best sports facilities in the North East in the Aquatic Centre to train at.
“People might not be aware, but you can teach people to dive as soon as they are old enough to swim, so if anyone thinks they might be the next Tom Daley, they’re more than welcome to come along and have a try.”
The club is also on the lookout for financial assistance from private businesses.
“Should we make a deal with a Sunderland business we will of course promote them as much as we can,” said Mr Price.
