The left-back was given an extended break due to his World Cup exertions with Costa Rica and returned to the Academy of Light as scheduled on Monday.

How long he remains at the League One club for though remains to be seen.

The defender has this summer expressed a desire to leave the Stadium of Light and he is expected to depart before the transfer window closes.

Sunderland face Middlesbrough in their final pre-season friendly at the Riverside on Friday night and it is unlikely that Oviedo would be involved in the game against Tony Pulis’ side.

The Black Cats signed left-back Reece James, currently injured, in the summer, while Adam Matthews and Denver Hume have also played left-back throughout pre-season.

Sunderland are looking to move several high earners off the books including Oviedo, Lamine Kone, Didier Ndong and Papy Djilobodji.

Ndong and Djilobodji failed to return to pre-season training and as such the club has stopped paying their wages.

Kone did return to pre-season training but is training away from the first team after he made it clear he wanted to leave.

There has been interest in Oviedo from Club Brugge, with further interest from clubs in France and Germany.

But Stewart Donald revealed last week that he didn’t think Club Brugge would have the necessary funds to seal a deal. Donald also admitted he didn’t expect to see the wantaway quartet play for the club again.
