CHARITY champs can get on their bikes to help Wearside families.

Sunderland AFC’s registered charity the Foundation of Light has announced the next instalment of its epic Cycle Challenges – and is looking for riders to join in.

The 320-mile route will take cyclists from Brussels to Paris next July, with riders climbing more than 15,700ft as they pass through Huy, La Roche en Ardenne, Durbuy, Sedan, Novion-Porcien and Soissons, ending the monumental challenge under the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Some of SAFC’s most famous names will join the riders on their journey, with former players Marco Gabbiadini, Michael Gray and Chris Makin taking part in previous challenges.

The event is sponsored by Grafton Group plc for the fourth year running.

Phil King, Foundation of Light’s head of commercial, said: “Our annual Cycle Challenges have become one of the high points of our event calendar with more than 30 riders cycling across Italy last year.

“There’s a great sense of camaraderie and achievement throughout the teams and this will certainly be a ride to remember.”

Previous Cycle Challenges have seen riders travel more than 1,000 miles from Dublin to Sunderland and across Italy, raising more than £70,000 to help fund Foundation of Light’s community projects across the North East.
