FANCY a bit of comic relief from the election fever gripping the country?

A Sunderland bar is offering a free comedy night as an alternative to Thursday night’s TV election marathon.

Organisers of the event at Greens, in Low Row, say it’s guaranteed to lighten the mood.

Headlining the event is veteran TV funnyman and Comedy Store regular Vladimir McTavish and Carl Hutchinson.

Hutchinson has just finished touring with stand-up comedian and actor Chris Ramsey, one of the stars of the BBC2 sitcom Hebburn.

Their supporting cast includes compere Christian Steel, funnyman Mike Holford and musician John Thorley.

Bar manager Paul Davison said: “I think we’ve all had enough of the election now, so we thought we come up with a nice distraction to give people a reason to leave the house.

“Maybe people could come directly from the polling booth.

“They’ll need a drink and a laugh after placing their X in the box.

“We are really pleased with the line-up we have managed to secure for the comedy night.

“We decided to make it free entry, but many comedy clubs would charge at least £10 to get in to see to see an array of comedic talent like this.

“To recreate a comedy club atmosphere, we are putting free nibbles on the tables, and our pizza menu will be available all night.

“If the event is well supported and there is an appetite for more, we will look at putting on a regular comedy night, so if you fancy a laugh, get yourself down.”

The comedy night at Greens, opposite Sunderland Minster, starts at 7.30pm.
