Sunderland coastguard and emergency services attend first call outs of 2020

In separate incidents at around 2am on Wednesday, January 1, the Sunderland coastguard rescue team was called to reports of two people in distress on the Wearmouth bridge.

The first call came at 2.16am, followed by a second at 2.53am.

Volunteers from Sunderland RNLI were also in attendance and both incidents were resolved by officers from Northumbria Police.

The coastguard rescue team said: “It didn't take us long to get our first call out of 2020 as we were paged twice in the night to assist Police with incidents in the city on the River Wear. Both incidents were safely resolved by the police on our arrival.”
