Sunderland city centre gallery set to relocate

Months after it was announced that the City Library would be moving to the Museum and Winter Gardens, the gallery which was based on the top floor of the former library in Fawcett Street will also move location.

NGCA staff are now based at the National Glass Centre, part of the University of Sunderland who oversee the contemporary art gallery.

Plans are in place for a new gallery space to be built and opened later this year, with more details due to be announced this summer.

During the transition NGCA will be presenting a programme of exhibitions at the Glass Centre, as well as internationally.

A spokeswoman said: “There will also be a focus on maintaining a presence within Sunderland in the build up to the city’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2021, with an offsite events programme and family workshops.”

Highlights will include an event by digital technology artist Simon Martin, being held at Durham Castle and Durham University on May 5, and Chad McCail’s Liars of Earth which will be at the Long Gallery at National Glass Centre from June 24 – October 8.
