FIREFIGHTERS were called out when a deep fat fryer at a chip shop burst into flames.

A crew from Fulwell Station went to Fountains Fish and Chips, Exmouth Square, Southwick, at 7.25am yesterday.

The owner tried to put it out himself using a fire extinguisher, but was unable to and got out without being injured.

The fryer was destroyed and the shop was lightly smoke damaged.

Fire crews also dealt with a number of rubbish fires between Saturday night and yesterday morning.

They included two industrial-sized wheelie bins in Blandford Street, a skip and two bins at the rear of Chester Road, a skip in Cairo Street, Hendon and a skip in Portobello Lane.

A crew from Fulwell was also called to a derelict house in Marley Crescent, at 10.40pm on Saturday, to put out a rubbish fire.
