The group, set up last month to offer a 'strong, coherent and democratic' voice for Sunderland fans, has been well supported so far, with over 2,000 signing up in the first two weeks.

70 fans attended the inaugural meeting last week at the Peacock in Peel Square, with the group writing to the club to request a meeting with Bain and owner Ellis Short.

The former has agreed to meet Interim Chairman Andrew Hird for an informal discussion about how the two parties can engage and liaise going forward.

A R&WA statement read: "It is intended that the introductory meeting will meeting will lay foundations required for future interactions between the R&WA & Sunderland AFC for the rest of this season and beyond.

"R&WA has had a decent start and the last two weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind, with supporters really getting behind the notion of a strong, independent democratic supporters organisation. Many clubs across the country have at least one active supporters' group that will engage and challenge the club on behalf of their members and communicate with supporters regularly. We launched R&WA so that Sunderland fans have such a platform too. We hope you continue to back us."
