Sunderland cemetery land to be used as private gardens

A STRIP of land that has formed part of Bishopwearmouth Cemetery is to be made into private gardens.

The land is fenced off from the burial grounds, as well as the rear gardens of properties on the eastern side of Hadleigh Road and Heath Square.

Now, these gardens will be extended onto the cemetery land, described as overgrown and unkempt, with no access.

Sunderland City Council’s environmental health team had no objections to the works as the land in question has never been used for burials.

The authority’s development control sub-committee voted to allow the planning application this week.

However, Coun Bob Price said he was worried about potential costs to the council.

He said: I’ve got no objection to it, but I wouldn’t want the council lumbered with the cost of fencing.”
