AN “amazing” unit which helps dozens of cancer patients every day has been nominated for an award.
The Phoenix Unit, based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, was today hailed as a team full of caring professionals who go the extra mile.
“Nothing is ever too much trouble and they never stop. All of them are marvellous and so deserve this award.”
It prompted unit manager Jill Bell to say: “That’s so lovely. To think that patients who are going through their own journey have taken the time to do this and put us forward, that is amazing.”
The unit helps people who need infusions which are intravenously given as medicine and chemotherapy.
People with gastro pain and rheumatology can be helped and the specialist team gives help through drip transfusions.
A 21-strong team of staff help between 50 and 70 people a day and also goes out three days a week to help patients in their own homes.
“The Royal was one of the first hospitals in the NHS to do that,” added Jill.
The Phoenix Unit also provides an outreach service and its work is really appreciated by the public.
The nomination added: “Nothing is ever too much trouble and they never stop. All of them are marvellous and so deserve this award.”
The Best of Health awards have already had some impressive entries but we want even more.
It’s easy to nominate and you can do it either by filling in the form on this page or by going online and nominating on the JPNE Events website.
Feel free to put forward as many of your favourite health workers as you think deserve honours.
So whether it’s your favourite GP, an outstanding nurse or a popular carer, there’s a category for all parts of our health profession.
All entries must be received by Friday, March 20. After that, a panel of judges will meet around a week later to begin the difficult task of narrowing down the field.
They will draw up a shortlist in each of our categories. And all those who make it to the shortlist will be invited to the finals at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, April 16.
To nominate, either fill in the form on this page or go online and enter at http://www.jpne-events.co.uk/best-of-health/
