Sunderland quickly adapted and limited the chances for the opposition and they created an excellent chance themselves after skipper Sam Middleton broke down play in midfield, slipped it left to Matthew Dench who ran and made the return pass to the back post where Sam Middleton had made a lung busting run and dove in at the back post only to see his shot go an inch wide.

Durham University then responded and broke into the Sunderland D and then an intended pass back across goal slid between the keepers legs and in.

The game remained tight but Sam Middleton, then dove in at the back post once again when another fast counter attacking move saw Andrew Wilkinson playing in a good ball. Yet again the ball slid just the wrong side of the post.

The home team responded brightly in the second half and quickly got their deserved equaliser after good work through the middle from Neale Holmes as Sam Middleton broke into the D and laid off to Andy Wilkinson who finished smartly.

A slight lapse in concentration in the final minute saw Durham win a penalty corner which was flicked dangerously wide but a deflection took it past defender Chris Brown on the right post.

Unluckily, Sunderland found themselves 2-1 down with barely seconds left.

The game ended and Durham University celebrated a really hard fought victory.
