Moyes, writing in Red & White, the club's match programme, said: "So much about football is the history of the club, the great players, teams and games.

"This is something that will never go away. People who can still recall Charlie's team will remember a tremendous player and great leader.

"And it is a fitting tribute for all he diod for the club that he is still held in such high esteem.

"We have to produce our own history now and I hope the 1964 team can give today's players added inspiration in showing what it can be like to be seen as Sunderland heroes."
