A POOL has netted the chance to host an international competition.
Sunderland Aquatic Centre will host teams from Great Britain, Russia, Israel, Moldova and Slovenia in the third and final qualifying round for the 2014 European Men’s Water Polo Championship in Budapest in July.
It will be the first time the pool has hosted an international tournament.
The event, from Thursday, November 7, to Sunday, November 10, will see three qualifying tournaments take place at the same time, with the others to be held in Denmark and Portugal.
Councillor John Kelly, cabinet member for public health, wellness and culture, said: “It’s a real coup to attract an international sporting event of this calibre to the city.
“As well as raising the profile of Sunderland and the Aquatic Centre, it will also bring tens of thousands of pounds into the local economy.”
Tickets are available via www.ticketmaster.co.uk and cost £10 for adults and £8 for concessions, with a limited number from the centre on the day.
Due to the event, the main pool will be closed to the public from 11am on Tuesday to Monday, November 11.
However, sessions will be available in the diving pool on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 7.30am to 8.30am and 2pm and 4pm.
The Aquatic Centre’s soft play and the Wellness Centre will be open as normal.
