But the chances of landing the Belgian international are remote to say the least given Sunderland's financial situation, with reports suggesting United are open to offers for the 29-year-old but only on a permanent deal.

Reports in the national press suggest Manchester United would be willing to do business for around £20million but the fee coupled with his wages mean it would be a non-starter for the Black Cats.
