Sunderland signed Swdish duo Joel Asoro and Oscar Krusnell last summer, with Asoro in particular rising quickly to prominence, having featured for the first team already this season despite being just 17.

Karlsson is the latest teenager to catch the eye.

Welsh believes Sunderland’s young players posses the right mentality and character as they build towards their next big test.

The coach’s U23 side are next in action at Wolves on Monday night in the last 32 of the Checkatrade Trophy.

With the score goalless, a heavy touch took him away from goal, with Liverpool clearing the ball. The Reds went on to win 2-0.

"It was a very good chance and we worked hard to get that chance, and I’d have loved to have scored it," said the wide player.

"But you have to make sure it doesn’t play on your mind, and instead concentrate on improving your own game so that next time you do take that chance when it comes along.

"When you’ve got someone like JD in the team, he’s not a bad person to learn from because finishing is his game.
