Sunderland AFC news: Cats linked with £8m Lorient striker, Poyet in Forest frame, Lazio eye move for forward

Borini scored his fourth goal of the season in the 3-0 win over relegation rivals Norwich City at Carrow Road, while also providing the assist for Jermain Defoe's 16th goal of the campaign.

Lazio have been linked with making a summer move for Borini, who joined Sunderland on a permanent deal last summer, moving to Wearside from Liverpool for £8million.

Meanwhile, Sunderland and Crystal Palace are reported to be showing an interest in Lorient striker Benjamin Moukandjo.

The Daily Mail report that the Cameroon international, who has scored 12 goals in 21 starts this season after joining in the summer from Reims, has caught the eye of Sunderland.

The 27-year-old can play as a central striker and on either flank and has one year left on his contract.

The Mail report Lorient value the striker at around £8million and claim Palace and Sunderland sent scouts to watch Moukandjo against Toulouse on Saturday night.

Former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet could be set for a return to management in England.

The Uruguayan is in the frame to take over at Nottingham Forest, report the Sunday People.

Former Brighton and Sunderland manager Poyet is now in charge of Greek side AEK Athens on a short-term contract until the summer.

But reports suggest the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder is on the shortlist of names being considered to succeed Dougie Freedman, who was sacked last month after a falling-out with the Championship club's owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi.

And finally, Match of the Day pundits Jermaine Jenas and Trevor Sinclair heaped praise on Sunderland - and captain Lee Cattermole - after the 3-0 win over Norwich City.

Jenas, who had criticised Sam Allardyce's tactics in the defeat to Leicester City earlier in the week said: "He [Allardyce] tried to play the exact same way against Leicester last week.

"The difference was Leicester’s full-backs don’t move and are pretty solid as a back four, so it didn’t work.

"But it did really work [against Norwich].

"Jermain [Defoe] was very clever all day, getting himself in between defenders and they were unable to mark him."

No-nonsense skipper Cattermole stood out, though, the midfielder making three goalline clearances to help Sunderland on their way to victory.

Jenas added: "Lee Cattermole was brilliant throughout the whole game.

"He was the real driving force behind Sunderland’s performance.

"He ran his socks off, he was strong and was a real leader.

"When you talk about passion, desire and leadership, he pretty much epitomised everything that was good about Sunderland."
