Nelson took to Twitter to post this message: "Devastated doesn't come close to how I'm feeling right now but that's how football can be.

"I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Hartlepool United, you've given me the experience and the opportunity to see football from a different perspective and for that I won't forget it anytime soon.

"I would like to wish the fans, the coaching staff and the players all the best for the season and hopefully turn things around in time. Thank you."

Hartlepool’s head physio Ian Gallagher said: "The scan confirmed our worst fears.
