Sunderland AFC to hold minute's silence in honour of victims of Chapecoense plane crash

Sunderland AFC will this weekend hold a minute's silence as a mark of respect to the 71 people killed in the Chapecoense plane crash.

Sunderland host Leicester City at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Brazilian Serie A side Chapecoense were on their way to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, when their plane came down close to the Columbian city of Medellin.

On board the flight were the players, staff and officials of Chapecoense as well as a number of journalists on their way to cover the biggest game in the club’s history.

A Sunderland statement said: "Players from both sides will also wear black armbands as Premier League sides join forces in a show of solidarity with the global footballing family.

"Supporters attending Saturday’s fixture at the Stadium of Light are asked to take their seats in sufficient time to ensure that the silence is observed in the appropriate manner."
