Jan Kirchhoff: Winning return

SUNDERLAND 4-3-3Jordan Pickford: Superb late save from Morgan after relatively quiet afternoon. Beat out a shot from Albrighton in first half. 6Billy Jones: Got forward to support attack and did it well. 6Papy Djilobodji: Recalled for John O'Shea and justified his gaffer's selection, vital second-half block from Slimani. Excellent distrubtion. 7Lamine Kone: Looked strong and confident, building on a fine display at Anfield last week. 7 Patrick van Aanholt: Involved in much of the attacking forays and was denied stonewall pen after Simpson's trip. 7Jason Denayer: Looked at home in his midfield slot but was a half-time withdrawal. 6Didier Ndong: Gave the ball away a couple of times but continued his good form from Liverpool. 6Steven Pienaar: At the heart of much of Sunderland's best pressure in first half only to be hurt in a collision with Albrighton at end. 7Duncan Watmore: Had first-half shot blocked and lively again, his blocked 77th-minute shot setting up Defoe's goal. Sad to see him stretchered off late on. 7Jermain Defoe: Fluffed a decent first-half chance from an Anichebe ball but tucked away eighth of season and PL goal 151 with aplomb. 7Victor Anichebe: Continued his superb form up front. Fired wide from his best opening, but excellent link-up play as proved by set-up for Defoe goal. 8

SubsJan Kirchhoff (for Denayer 46) had a hand, or should that be a head, in Sunderland's goal, not a great header but goes in off Huth. Cool in midfield. 7Seb Larsson (for Pienaar 46) sent over corner for Sunderland's first goal and was busy in middle. 6Javier Manquillo (for Watmore 84) came on late for unlucky Watmore. N/A
