SUNDERLAND 10 YEARS AGO: Caldwell hoping to punish keeper Davis

Here's what the Echo was reporting on SAFC 10 years ago today.

I HOPE IT’S HELL FOR KEL

Caldwell wants to make life tough for old pal

Steve Caldwell wishes former team-mate Kelvin Davis anything but many happy returns when the keeper comes back to the Stadium of Light tomorrow.

Davis, who spent an unhappy single season on Wearside before his move to St Mary’s in the summer, will be desperate to impress.

But while Black Cats captain Caldwell wishes Davis all the best for the future, he is hoping that Saturday will be another day for the former Sunderland keeper to forget at the Stadium of Light.

He told the Echo: “Kelvin is a good lad and despite the criticism that came his way last season he is also a good keeper. But I really hope he has an off day against us tomorrow.”

He chuckled: “Normally I would wish him all the best in his career. But tomorrow it will suit me nicely if he lets in three of four!”

Davis, despite one or two blunders on the south coast this season has actually dome well for his new club. He has kept seven clean sheets in 19 games this season and his team’s defensive record is among the top half dozen in the league.

Caldwell said: “I know Kelvin had a difficult season for us in the Premiership, but to be fair I don’t think there are too many players among last season’s squad who could say they had an enjoyable time.

“It’s just that goalkeeping is such a key position and if you make mistakes there, everybody notices them. He seems to be doing well enough for his new club this season but we intend to really put him to the test tomorrow.

“We are quite an attacking team this season especially at home and especially when we are on song. And I hope that by the time the game is over Kelvin knows he’s really been in a match.

“We haven’t had the best of form lately and we know that if we are to get back on track then we’ve got to be winning games like the one against Southampton. So we’ll welcome Kelvin back to the Stadium of Light but hopefully it will be a disappointing day for him and an excellent one for us.”
